BIOTECH BOOK BAGS 2008 NAST OUTSTANDING BOOK AWARD
20-June-2008 SEARCA News Release
"The
Unfolding Gene Revolution," a book co-published by
SEARCA
and
International
Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA)
clinched the 2008 National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST)
Outstanding Book Award.
Written by Dr. Eufemio Rasco, a plant breeder and Professor in the
University of the Philippines Mindanao, the book unravels the
development of plant biotechnology with focus on
genetic engineering. It comprehensively reviews the basic
sciences relevant to biotechnology and the art and science of
genetic engineering in a simple, non-technical and humorous way. The
existing global biosafety regulations that address possible risks
associated with genetic engineering are presented as well.
Dr. Rasco said "The NAST award is probably the
most prestigious award a science book can obtain in this
country. The prestige that goes with the award is more than I hoped
for when I wrote the book… The book is a one-stop shop for plant
biotechnology for the curious student, the educated layman, and even
a graduate student."
The award is one way of recognizing outstanding works in the various
fields of science and technology and is given by NAST annually. A
plaque of recognition will be given to the authors
on July 10, 2008 at the Manila Hotel.
